The design process for creating StepByStep, Soar Therapy's sequencing and learning tool.

ABOUT StepByStep

StepByStep is a therapeutic and educational tool for the iPad which helps assess and improve the sequencing skills of every day tasks for kids and adults with impaired or developing cognition.

OPPORTUNITY

SOAR Therapy wanted to create a digital tool to replace the existing physical sequencing cards that their Occupational Therapists used with their patients. The iPad's large touch screen provided the perfect platform to enhance the traditional physical sequence cards experience, add interactivity, and create a fun environment for the patients while allowing the therapist to track performance.

Client interviews

I worked closely with the SOAR Therapy staff to determine pain points and craft the solution

Wireframing

I created wireframes and functional annotations to obtain client approval prior to design phase
Visual design

I developed the visual design based on the SOAR Therapy's logo and branding elements to create a colorful and engaging user experience

Prototyping

I crafted interactive prototypes using InVision to demonstrate functionality for approval from the client and the iOS developer

SOLUTION: THE DESIGN PROCESS

STEP 1: CLIENT INTERVIEWS

I learned from the client that there was a real opportunity in the occupational therapy space to create an innovative learning tool based on the prinicples of the traditional therapeutic sequencing cards. We discussed the current process and concluded that the iPad would be the best platform for this project.

STEP 2: UX + WIREFRAMING

Collaborating with SOAR Therapy, we began to conceptualize the solution, focusing on wireframes to experience how the app would function before diving deeper into design. My wireframes painted a clear picture of the user's experience as they engaged with the app.

STEP 3: Visual Design + User Interface

Taking into consideration that much of the audience are children, I created an interface that first and foremost was simple, but also fun, playful, and engaging.

I focused on large, attractive touch targets, bold use of the brand's colors, and playful typography. Within the iPad environment, the design really allows the rich content offering to really shine through and create a memorable learning experience.

STEP 4: DEVELOPER HANDOFF

The StepByStep app screens were all created in Photoshop and delivered to the iOS developer. Constant communication and collaboration with the developer reduced the amount of work for the team later on in post-launch updates.

OUTCOME

The StepByStep app launched on the Apple App Store with much success. Together, the SOAR Therapy team, myself and the iOS developer delivered a first-in-class tool for occupational therapists that continues to enrich the lives of the patients they work with. The app has received multiple 5.0 ratings on the App Store and continues to be updated with new content on a regular basis.
